Smoke free environment: at what cost?- 2005-11-17
Following a partial ban on smoking in the UK, bingo halls owners are making themselves heard. Indeed, in an attempt to crack down on smokers and enforce tougher regulation in public places, the Department of Health has taken a series of preventive actions.
At this time, this legislation might jeopardize a significant amount of bingo halls, as numerous fed-up customers will seek entertainment elsewhere. Several representatives of the UK Bingo Association have voiced their criticisms, stating the government’s partial position would result in the potential closing of over 150 establishments and a severe blow to the bingo community.
In the UK, bingo accounts for 3 million regular players in 575 official clubs. This leisure activity is very popular amongst women who comprise 75% of the entire clientele. With the implementation of this partial ban, bingo operators are afraid many angry players will resort to going to private-members’ clubs and other locations were drinking and smoking is not being frown upon.
While everyone agrees that these measures will have a positive health impact, a growing number of detractors are going forth and proclaiming their disbelief in the way this entire situation is being orchestrated by implicated authorities.
